USED TAXI SHORTAGE - UPDATE

October 2011

As previously reported, with the declining sales over the last three years of brand new accessible taxis, decent used vehicles are becoming more and more scarce. This month, trade vehicles purchased from our usual sources have increased in price by approx 10%.

A rare low mileage 3 year old taxi recently sold attracted an unbelievable response and could have sold a dozen times.

Very low level of enquiry for brand new, huge levels of enquiry for used.

Unsurprising given the state of the trade at present.

BRITAIN`S LEADING CONVERTER OF ACCESSIBLE VEHICLES INTRODUCES NEW TAXI

Oughtred and Harrison, ambualance, motability and accessible vehicle manufacturers, have introduced the OH7 TAXI. The vehicle is tested to Whole European Approval M1 Approval, just like the E7.

The taxi comes with all "Hackney" requirements such as motion and footbrake locks, intercom, heating, front and rear signage, meter, partition, ramps and belts.

Full details and pictures of the taxi are found on our "NEW TAXIS" section along with pricing.

Finally a large, well established company has entered the market providing quality build and after sales service.

Of course we can also supply other wheelchair accessible products such as converted MPVs and Buses.

OXFORD COUNCIL MAKING IT`S OWN LAWS?

They Wouldn`t Do That - Would They?*

Yet another example of a council encouraging taxi operators to break the law.                        November 2011

Oxford Council have decided to implement a policy requiring Hackney Carriages to have CCTV,  recording both vision AND SOUND of their passengers from the moment the engine is running until 30 minutes after it is switched off. Even if there is no indication of bad behaviour this wll take place.

So if you don`t want to become a YOUTUBE phenomenon, then don`t travel by taxi in Oxforrd. Or don`t talk if you do.

Civil liberties group, Big Brother Watch, have branded the policy as "A staggering invasion of privacy".

The Information Commissioner has stated that cameras should be activated only in response to a specifice risk situation, such as a driver panic button being activated.

Yet again a council far exceeds it`s powers when administering the taxi industry.

A Local Authority CAN NOT IMPLEMENT BYLAWS WHICH GO BEYOND THE BOUNDARIES OF STATUTORY LAW,  as voted on by parliament.

Of ocurse, when some hapless cabbie is sued by a passenger, will he or she be able to say "The Council Made Me Do It"? Not likely. Ignorance of the law is no defence. The council may also be sued but that will not help the cab driver. Oh, and who pays the council fine? You guessed it.

Dear Council Workers

Please stick to what you are good at and leave the law to the police and courts. When I think of something you are good at I`ll let you know.

*Apologies to Alex G, of On The Edge, SKY CHANNEL 200, for nicking his catch-phrase.

COUNCILS MAKING THEIR OWN LAWS

OCTOBER 2011 UPDATE

"WE NEED TO SEE THE LOG BOOK"

Yes, this one, Where you change vehicles and the council encourage you yet again to break the law by insisting that they see the log book or v5 before they will licence the new vehicle.

BY LAW, the dealer must change the details on the v5 and send it off to the DVLA. We get loads of people asking us to give them the log book. We really can not as we would be fined for doing so.

GOOD NEWS.

If you can find a council officer clever enough to read the V5, then the new type of V5 says in nice bold lettering at the top

"THIS DOCUMENT IS NOT PROOF OF OWNERSHIP".

Should be simple enough even for them.

Mind you, with councils having council fitters pretending to be MOT examiners working in their council garages pretending to be MOT stations and certain councils issuing their own illegal MOT certs to taxi drivers for the last 23 years, I`m not too confident.

 BRISTOL BLUE - IT`S SEPP BLATTER`S FAULT

October 2011

Funny how barmy council rules always make me think of Bristol, and their mandatory hackney carriage colour Bristol Blue, used by no vehicle manufacturer and therefore a cost of £1500 to repaint each taxi in Bristol.

Apparently, this colour policy emanates from the failed England World Cup bid. Bristol City Council seemingly promised that all public transport would be this shade of blue come the World Cup. No, it is not the April 1st issue.

Not content with this farce (how many years did they think it would take to paint the taxi fleet by the way?) Bristoll CC have also introduced an 8 year age policy, just at the point in history when there are not enough decent used taxis to go around, never mind in a couple of years time.

Planning, research and forethought. Yes, Bristol hate all of those. If only I had invented the phrase "You couldn`t make it up!"

In the taxi trade, you don`t need to make it up!!

EURO 5 IS HERE

(Actually it`s been here a while, but some people don`t want you to know)

The new generation of Peugeot engine, powering the Expert and Scudo taxis, is here, offering greater bhp and greater fuel economy (130 or 163 bhp and 41 mpg overall).

For brand new taxis, we have 2 demos with 350 miles or so on the clock, to sell and these are the last of the Euro 4 engined cabs we have. New orders on the OH7 (MADE IN ENGLAND - MI APPROVED)  will be Euro 5, benefitting from more mpg, more power and better warranty. I wonder why it`s been kept quiet by the others?
